Journal / Field note 01

On making a Bonnet from a piece of old cloth.

A Bonnet is small enough to hold in the palm, but it changes the entire reading of a doll. This is a note on proportion, patience, and the surface of the textile.

The first decision is not the shape. It is the cloth. Antique cotton carries an existing rhythm: a flower is already placed, a crease has already softened, and the white is rarely still white. The pattern must listen before it asks anything of the surface. For a Bonnet, proportion is everything. The crown should sit with a little air, the brim should frame rather than hide, and the ties should fall as if they have always belonged there. A millimetre can change the expression of a whole outfit.
Small clothing is not a smaller kind of making. It is a closer one.

The quiet standard

Once the pattern is settled, the work becomes a sequence of small checks: press the fold, test the closure, place the embroidery, inspect the inside.
